Need to talk with men.
Ending violence against women has been a focus of the women’s organizations. Women are victims of violence. Women are survivors of violence. Women have agency. Women have voices. This story needs another chapter and a rather powerful one where men act against violence that women face. Men support women who are facing violence. Men talk to other men. Men act as role models. To enable men to do this they need to stop being at the fringes. They need to feel responsible and play a proactive role. Bell bajao! is the title of this chapter breaking the silences that hound male inaction and inability. When I started working on this inclusive approach I was torn about – will this mean giving away a chance to give women a voice. I realized that when it comes to violence faced by women men too need a voice. They experience violence, see violence and imbibe violence as behaviour norms. This vicious cycle has to be broken. Where are the natural allies for Bell Bajao – the silent men, who are not violent themselves but hesitate to take action. What if they take a stand?? What if they start RINGING THE BELL??
