Arranged Marriages
I am not a big fan of arranged marriages, and find it a little strange; but at the same time I do not believe that love marriages always provide a better bargaining power for women in terms to domestic violence. Of course, they do provide more bargaining power in terms of having your say, because you know the person from before and are not inhibited in any way to speak your mind. However, in an arranged marriage, because you are entirely with new people, you may reserve your opinions more than you would in general.
There is an example of a top Indian-Russian model who got married to her boyfriend (Russian) and left the modelling world for maritial bliss. However, she couldnt feel the warmth of her new found happiness for very long, as soon after her wedding she became subject to domestic violence. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/City_Supplements/Bombay_Times/Not_without_my_son_/articleshow/2123770.cms
Above is an article about her. So this shows, that domestic violence is not restricted to lesser educated couples/arranged-married couples or anything of that sort; this is found in many other scenarios as well.
Instead of terming the problem as the result of arranged/love marriages, one should realise that people from all (or any) walks of life could be facing similar problems, and so it is important to think of ways to prevent anything like this, possibly in ways of subtly training women to give significance to their own self-respect – this might be one of the many possible solutions to the problem.
ps: madhur bhandarkar i think is making a movie ‘Fashion’ based on this model’s true life story
