Dv and Tax

December 3, 2008adminblog0

In a highly money oriented world, I have come to realize that often the government, and individuals themselves fail to see the value of certain social issues, unless it has a monetary impact on themselves or the economy. So, while doing my research for my dissertation on domestic violence, I was thrilled to find a research article by the WHO (2004) on the monetary costs of interpersonal violence.

Key facts that I came across in the report:

  • Intimate partner violence costs the American economy $12.6 billion on an annual basis.

  • The 1994 Violence against Women Act in the US, has resulted in an estimated net benefit of $16.4 billion, including $14.8 billion in averted victim’s costs.

If such a study was done in India, I wonder just how much money the average taxpayer would save?! Moreover, it is a useful tactic in regards to getting the individual and the government to take action, as everybody feels the pinch in their pockets more often than not. Also taking a monetary perspective in addition to the various others reflects a multi-level approach – one that is both personal & public. The issue no longer becomes somebody else’s problem, if the consequences and benefits apply to everyone, especially when it is in the language that everyone understands – money!

Anybody have any thoughts?
