Social Media Buzz: Domestic violence on the rise due to the poor economy

April 10, 2009adminblog0

We, at Bell Bajao, have written quite a few posts about how Domestic Violence is on the rise due to sinking economy. The share an inverse relationship. Sinking economy = Layoffs, Fewer jobs = less money = frustration = anger = taking out anger on wife and kids.

Not surprisingly, this theory is surfacing in various news reports all over the worls. This is a post we had writen a few days ago about how Domestic Violence rise contributed to Bad Economy.

Various social networking sites also have been posting links related to this. This recent post from DrKathieMathis: Domestic violence on the rise due to the poor economy: URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30156918/

This article states: "Eighty-eight percent of law enforcement officials surveyed nationwide believe the economic crisis has led, or will lead, to more child abuse and neglect, according to top police officials from Los Angeles, Boston, Milwaukee and Philadelphia who recently held a news conference in Washington."

It might be unfair however to blame DV on bad economy. As Michael J. Cheaney puts in his comment on domestic violence being an unintended side effect of bad economy, "I’m not saying that the economy does not play a role and that what Chief Flynn is saying is not without merit….What I am saying though is that blaming the economy is disingenuous at best lazy at worst."

What do you think? Would love to know your thoughts.
