Curse of being a Mother….

May 3, 2009adminblog0

It is said that Mothers like boy child and Fathers like girl child more than the other. Sheena was such a mother hailed from a lower middle class family who loved to have a baby boy and she got overwhelmed with joy when Almighty gifted her with a sweet little boy.  She spent less time on her own makeup and spent more time on pampering and caring the toddler. She took that as a full time job as she was not a career-woman.

Days and months pass by and the toddler has become a chubby sweet little naughty boy and they named him Ajay. It hurts more to Sheena when Ajay falls down and injures his tender knees. She happily carried him until the wound gets healed and Ajay was her world. She never trusted day-cares or play-schools worrying that they might give something and make the kid sleep all day. She simply enjoyed watching the kid playing with neighbors of his age. When Ajay was old enough to go school she wanted her husband to send him to the best school near by and that was little bit pricy for the factory worker. They cut down their own comforts in order to make the budget and send the kid to the best school as he was their only kid.

The love and affection of the parents made him little naughty but Ajay was brilliant in his studies. Sheena was so happy when he outperformed in extracurricular activities too. She never paid attention to her loosing figure or charm. She gained more weight; some visible grey hairs by the time kid become a guy and finished his engineering with high scores. She was so stressed and worried that her only little boy might need to relocate to find a good job. Yes, to her the 24 year old guy is still a little boy who used to sit on her lap and hear stories.

God heard her prayers and he got a nice job in the same town with handsome salary. She advised him to save more for his marriage and so he did. Years passed and he managed to buy a car thinking his loving parents are getting older and needs more visits to hospitals. She insist him to find a girl to get married but Ajay wanted to become more stable financially before bringing his princess home. Sheena and her husband wanted a good girl for their beloved son and so they started searching through relatives and friends.

It was Diwali for the whole family when her son said he wanted to marry a girl at his work place. The marriage function was spectacular with all relatives and friends and his princess came home with all glory. Though he spend a significant amount of his life time earnings for the function including half of girl’s side expenses to make the function great, he had also planned a 10days honeymoon trip to Singapore to surprise his princess.

After the trip his princess went back to her home to visit her parents. Days and weeks passed, but she never came back. After constant visits and phone calls Ajay realized that his princess consider her in-laws as "Monsters" and she wants Ajay to leave his parents and live in her house. He didn’t think twice to say ‘NO’; he couldn’t think of scraping his age old parents who brought him up battling their entire life; more over there was no such agreement before the marriage! Ajay’s wife and in-laws started threatening and abusing him. All they want him to do is to leave his parents or give divorce and a compensation of 50lakhs. Sheena was trying hard to console her dearest son to bring him out of distress.

It was early in the morning 5:30 Sheena heard the sound of boots and somebody knocking the door vigorously. Whole family got stunned to see police at their door step. Inspector was yelling at them about the complaints of dowry harassment and domestic violence made by Ajay’s wife and the court order she gained to evict them. The lady police in the team pushed and dragged Sheena into the jeep along with her husband and Ajay. Sheena begged the police about their innocence but police wasn’t paying attention to any of her words saying we have to take action against the complaint and have to enforce the court order.

Sitting on the concrete floor in the sub jail Sheena remember the day when she got Ajay, the day she become a Mother, with tears in her eyes and with heavy heart.

NB: Characters in this story are fictitious and if that resembles anyone that’s mere coincidence like several lakhs of Indian Families.
