In the News: Anu Peshawaria, Indian lawyer and activisit, fights for women's rights
Anu Peshawaria has dedicated her life to fighting for women and immigrant rights. As a lawyer, she has helped women from countries like India, Bangladesh, China and Russia to fight the violence that has been perpetrated against them. Take this case for example:
Imagine coming to the United States from another country to marry a man. He is a citizen, but you are not. He informs you that he will be going out with other women while you cook and clean for him. He takes away your passport and gives you no money. You don’t speak the language and you don’t know who to contact for help. "That is one of the cases I have, and there are many more like that. It is heartbreaking," says Anu. "and people need to know where to go for help."
In her new book, The Immigrant’s Dream, Peshawaria explores the intersection of immigration and domestic violence, providing critical information and resources to women who have no other recourse. Examples of information include which hospitals will admit a woman with no paperwork, shelter for homeless women and children, non profit organizations that will assist with services such as translation and paperwork completion, and where to go if you are a victim of certain crimes.
