Mahendra Gulati- the husband of Rajni, with the help of Vimla the wife of Mahender’s  elder brother, poured kerosene on Rajni and burnt her alive. Rajni stated this in her last statement before  taking her last breath on 9th December 2003. Mahender maintained an illicit relationship with Vimla even after his marriage with Rajni.

According to the crime records bureau the cases of bride buring is increasing northwards. In 2007 alone there were 75,930  cases of bride burning.
