It Takes Two: Men from all walks of life can now help curb violence against women

June 16, 2009adminblog0

The goal is to mobilize men from all walks of life who agree with the simple statement: "Violence and abusiveness is wrong. Sexual harassment, date rape, domestic battering and abuse are all forms of abuse that must stop." — with this vision in mind, Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc. aims to unite men from different walks of life and join in the fight to stop violence against women.

Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc is basically "a collaboration of the men’s outreach projects throughout the state of Massachusetts organising support for men in their communities for Jane Doe inc. statewide and it’s memeber agencies locally." It has been found that educating boys at a younger age itself about domestic vioelnce and other such issues helps in the prevention of abusive relationships to a great extent in the long run. At Men’s Initiative for Jane Doe Inc., they have therefore, been striving to involve young men and boys in the fight against domestic violence. They have adopted this approach for most of their past events too.

Also, Men’s Initiative For Jane Doe Inc. offers a number of ways in which men can get involved not only at an individual level, but at the youth and community level too. As the website says, "The initiative is based on the individual actions of members. For the working member, this will mean joining an action project, attending meetings and helping plan community activities. For the supporting member this means distributing literature where you work and live, carrying the membership card and having conversations with friends." This means that any man can join in and contribute to the cause in some way or another.

One can start with spreading awareness at the personal and individual level and then at the community and business level. The website itself lists a number of simple ways in which men can incorporate certain changes in their family and work emnvironment which could help curb violence against women to a great level. Thus, while joining an organisation is a more professional way of helping the cause, it is not necessary to do so. At the end of the day, each man’s individual efforts count more than anything else.

The Campaign Business Council, The Campaign Town Auxiliary Support and The Campaign Youth & Fathers Council, each invites men from different walks of life to come forward and support the cause.
