Legal Take: Reforms on Violence Against Women Laws
We have a law to protect women from Domestic Violence. In fact, we have one of the most progressive domestic violence laws ever made—Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. However, not many people know about this law. The Lawyers Resource India blog run by The National Network of Lawyers for Rights and Justice (a group of activist Lawyers committed for fighting disparities and inequality through legal cases) is constantly trying to push information on the laws for the prevention of Violence Against Women.
In a recent blog post titled Legal reforms on Rape & Violence Against Women – NCW India, The LRI gives complete pdfs of the relevant laws. This article specifically mentions Draft Bill of the The protection against sexual harassment of women 2005, Draft Bill ”Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act 2005″ and The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Rules 2005.

However, we all know about the gap between progressive politics and ground realities. Laws by itself can be an insufficient mechanism to address an issue unless there is the social will to effect change. Breakthrough’s Bell Bajao does just that. It calls on the common man to act. So Ring The Bell and bring Domestic Violence to a halt. Join our Facebook page and follows us on Twitter.
