Reading this makes me think over this issue again, ‘premarital sex.’ At 18 I don’t know if I am in favour or premarital sex or against it. I do know that I am not going to have random hook up’ s.
Sex for me is something that you do only with that someone special in your life. Many of my friends believe that it is necessary to have sex with your fiancé before marrying to see the sexual compatibility, “it has to be good, since it’s not the most important but one of the most things in a marriageâ€. Many have no problem with pre marital sex as long as protection is used.
In this context, Tamil actress Kushboo had said that pre marital sex was fine “provided safety measures are followed to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.” She went on to say that “no educated man would expect his wife to be a virgin”.
This resulted in flared tempers among the members of Tamil Protection Movement who organized protests in front of Nadigar Sangam, seeking an apology from the actress stating that she has brought disrepute to Tamil culture. Even members of Thirumavalavan’s Viduthalai Siruthaigal party went against her and organized protests.
I wonder if this is just to gain some political power, get some media attention, or is it because of some personal hatred. There are so many people In India who believe in pre marital sex but they don’t have cases filed against them in the Supreme Court. We live in a democratic country, where everybody has the freedom of speech. Kushboo was just expressing her personal opinions. What she said was also very correct. It is extremely important to take precaution before having sex to prevent diseases and unwanted pregnancy.
People who were voicing against her said that her statement tarnishes the image of a Tamil woman. Nowhere in her statement has Kushboo mentioned that she is talking on the behalf of Tamil women, nor does she represent them. She may be a role model for many women, and they should look at her as a strong and outspoken actress, who stands by her views even when the society is against her.
Kushboo said that no educated man expects his bride to be a virgin. I wonder if a statement like no woman should expect her husband to be a virgin would have ignited the same amount of sparks. When will we overcome old societal taboo’s and virginity notions? Can a girl not decide for herself whether she wants to have sex before marriage or not? What if she thinks her boyfriend is the one for her, and has sex with him, but the relationship ends after some time?
But I am very happy with our judiciary for dismissing the 22 criminal cases against her, and not coming under pressure from the people against her, saying that her comments were her personal view and she was entitled to express them. “The comments are not in variance to individual freedom,” the judges said in their judgment.

My views on pre marital sex is similar to khushboo.. as long as one wants to have it.. one knows the consequences and is taking safety measures.. what one is does is ones personal business.
I think mostly these stupid organisations were trying to get free publicity!

They’re being so violently passionate about trivialities. To tell the truth, no-one cares very much about the Tamil woman or her image. Definitely not the Tamil man. A woman – a person – can do anything she/he wants to and deal with the consequences themselves, as long as it’s not harming anyone else. Nobody needs a court case thrust in their faces to show them ‘values’.
One thing parents and most adults these days fail to realise:
Just because you tell your children not to do something, or shut them off from a particular world, it is not that your children don’t go there.
More often than not, no matter what values you have instilled in your children, they are likely today to engage in sexual activity before marriage. Mainly because the Indian view on sex is *unreasonable*. However, telling the youth to use a condom is reasonable, and they know it!
