Breakthrough presents ”Mahila Hakkina Mela”
Along with Aware Trust, Breakthrough launches a Naari Adaalath for fast tracking cases on Domestic Violence
Breakthrough’s Bell Bajao! Campaign against domestic violence will take a step ahead with the formation of a Naari Adaalath in Tumkur on the 13th of May, 2011. This initiative came in partnership with Aware Trust. The daylong “Mahila Hakkina Mela” was supported by DCP Mr Shom Shekhar and local MLA, Mr Sreenivas.
“Bell Bajao! has become a clarion call urging men and boys to take a stand against domestic violence,” said Sonali Khan, Country Director, of Breakthrough, “Through our partnerships with government agencies like the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the entertainment industry, the UN and community based groups, Breakthrough has already reached more than 130 million people across the country. We are honored that this initiative has seen the light of the day as we see it as a particularly important step to spread Bell Bajao’s message across Karnataka.”
“Breakthrough has been working extensively in Karnataka through the community, training women on gender rights, human rights and Para-legal services. This mela was a step ahead in the setting up of a “Naari Adaalath” to advocate for more effective implementation of Protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act, PWDVA 2005 and also to form a more effective link between the community, the Government and various service providers. We are grateful to our partners Aware Trust who made this possible. “added Vani Periodi, Breakthrough’s State Manager, Karnataka.
The mela will also include a performance of the Yakshagana. As part of Breakthrough’s Rights Advocates program an all girls’ theatre troupe was trained to perform the Yakshagana in Mangalore, India. The girls used the folk art as a medium to increase their mobility and expand their life skills. They have now taken on a leadership role and used Yakshagana to train women in the community on domestic violence, HIV/AIDS and women’s rights issues.
Breakthrough’s partners in Karnataka include Aware Trust, Vimochana, Mahila Samakhya and DEEDS.
