Besides the male ego the boy exhibited time and again, that I was ready to ignore everything was going good. The date was set and my Mother was called for "discussions" where the parents of the groom asked her, what would she be giving her son-in-law, when she responded with "my daughter" she got back laughs. The parents then very subtly pointed that the society would judge them and that their respect hung on what their daughter-in-law brought along. It dint matter if she was US-educated, cultured and belonged to a good family...no, their respect was solely based on what she brought. So I told my Mother, maybe the groom in question wasn't bad, it was just his parents who were "conservative" (I still judge myself for defending them). When the groom came back on this and said "Hey besides the list of things, can you also put a value against it like TV for 25000". Also, indications were thrown in about giving a card to each of the baraati, cars being arranged for the 600 people who came. It took a day or two of shocked silence and finally I said to myself. If I marry this person, I will hate myself for as long as I live. So all I said to him was, Sure we'll do all of that and after that for the rest of your life, you will do the household work, after all din't I just pay a big fat sum of money for you.
