My training rides consist of one shorter ride during the week of about 40 minutes and then one longer ride on a weekend day of at least an hour. Our favorite part of the trail is that it winds along both sides of the North Shore Channel and the northern tip of the Chicago River, so you’ll witness some wild (literally) nature views that make the mixed terrain totally worth it. You’ll also pass wetlands, dunes, beaches, bird sanctuaries, museums, and harbors, so prepare to dismount that bike a few times because you’ll probably want to take a few pics. Run Route. If you’re ever looking to bike to Evanston but are bummed that the Lakefront Trail doesn’t stretch quite that far north, fear not — the North Shore Channel Trail does. You can also find shorter, unpaved trails in the more southern parts of the Dan Ryan Woods.  I’m just no longer confident in people to put my life in their hands like that, as a daily commuter. Ramstad/North Shore State Trail is a 146 mile natural surface trail from Duluth to Grand Marais. Okay, so we’ve been mentioning the Chicago River a lot, but there are actually other rivers in Cook County (shocking, we know), and you and your bike deserve a change of scenery. After experiencing the split-second quickness of it in reality, I understand now that cyclist are still almost completely reliant on drivers looking out for cyclists before they open their doors. We woke up and had breakfast at the hotel. The North Branch Trail System offers paved and unpaved trails along approximately 20 miles of the North Branch of the Chicago River, making it a premier biking route in the northern suburbs. And for all you history buffs out there, look for signs describing the trail’s background story; it used to be an old railroad track built in the 1800s, right after the Great Chicago Fire. Its absence symbolizes the power of Chicago’s aldermen to obstruct improvements as the city grows its car-free transportation network. Wrong.  Near the end of the first day of riding during the AIDS Ride (about 80 miles in or so), I was mentally and physically fatigued.  In this event, Lake Shore Drive is completely closed to cars, and overtaken by cyclists. There’s really no guessing as to where you’re headed on the Green Bay Trail, as each trailhead conveniently coincides with marked Metra stops. I work out almost every day already, and have been biking at least once per week for the past several years. From there you can take the North Shore Channel Trail all the way to northern Evanston. Finally, I’m grateful that I got to experience this trip and that Ellen invited me along to join her adventures. That reminds me, thus far on the trip, I had accidentally eaten approximately five bugs and had seen one snake. If you haven't, you'll notice new bars, restaurants, fishing perches, marinas, and even a water theater, Chicago’s renovated 1.9-mile Riverwalk may be one of the city’s shorter bike paths, but you won’t miss out on any action here. And bonus points if you happen to bike the trail during the Ravinia Festival — a string of outdoor concerts that take place in Ravinia Park from June through September, every year since 1905. For me, the importance of training for endurance events is getting somewhat accustomed to the changes in that happen in my mind and body when I am fatigued – especially the fears that come to the surface. I thought the Lakeshore Trail might be crowded, as it often is, but it wasn’t too bad. The trail was originally a dirt path often used for horseback riding; though it’s now paved, an unpaved equestrian pathway still parallels the main trail. I rode north all the way to Lawrence, exited, and then headed West to pick up the North Shore Channel Trail, for some additional riding.
